Engagement & Graphic Designer

We are hiring an Engagement & Graphic Designer! Come and join our team!

Job Function: 2D / communications design, public engagement, participation & design projects

Job position: Engagement & Graphic Designer (mid weight)

Hours: 37.5 hrs per week Monday – Friday 9.30 – 6pm

Start date: Immediate start (or as soon as possible)

Salary: £29,000 – £31,500 (depending on experience)

make:good are looking to recruit a mid weight Engagement & Graphic Designer for public engagement and participation projects, as well as supporting in-house design for our newsletters, social media and podcast.

This is a very exciting opportunity that will allow you to work on a variety of projects, using a variety of mediums and softwares, designing assets and activities that will engage local people in neighbourhood change. We are keen on innovating and trying different approaches so we are looking for people to bring their ideas to the table, try out things and learn new things! 

About us

make:good is a design and engagement practice dedicated to building positive community participation in shaping local change. We believe in meaningful and inclusive processes of co-creation, bringing people together to influence the future of their neighbourhoods. We harness local assets, build relationships and empower communities to create lasting social infrastructure and physical change in places. 

We apply a people-centred design practice to projects that gives people a sense of identity in the place they live in, creating simple, tangible tools that people can relate to. We demystify planning processes and do whatever it takes to offer people a wide range of ways to get involved and have their say, by making work that is engaging and accessible.

Our studio is based in Stratford; however, this role will also involve being in project neighbourhoods across London and beyond, as we believe in embedding ourselves in an area to really understand it. We are working remotely from home for part of the week but we encourage everyone to work from the studio at least one day per week and working on projects is a requirement of the job.

About you

Essential

  • Excellent interpersonal skills, able to build relationships with a wide range of people
  • Excellent digital graphic design skills including the use of CS Suite: InDesign, Photoshop & Illustrator
  • Strong visual eye capable of developing curious and exciting concepts for engagement tools
  • Versatile designer, who can make the most of others’ brand guidelines
  • Self-motivated and confident to develop design concepts in 2D independently
  • Experience of planning and delivering engagement activities and workshops with a strong facilitation background
  • Organised and able to manage time effectively
  • Interest in people, places and how people can influence the places where they live
  • Good level of IT skills (Microsoft Office and/or Google Suite)
  • Social media literate, able to come up with creative ways to display our work on social platforms (mainly Twitter and IG)

Desired

  • Web / app design (basic coding skills)
  • Knowledge of animation software (Adobe After Effects & Premiere or similar)
  • Experience of photography, video, podcasting skills 
  • Knowledge of working with other disciplines involved in built environment projects (planners, architects, landscape architects, engineers etc)
  • Experience recording audio for our podcast and project documentation

About the role

This role is about creating great engagement activities that allow for meaningful input from local people whilst ensuring that the visual quality of the work supports the engagement process. You will have the opportunity to develop the visual identities for a number of our projects, creating the design assets that play such a key role in our engagement.

This is more than your average graphic design role – there will also be plenty of opportunities to get hands on with our projects. This role would suit designers who are also interested in connecting with the communities their work aims to reach.

You will be expected to:

  • work flexibly within a team across a number of projects
  • develop and facilitate participatory resources and activities for people of all ages to draw out their views on change in their area
  • create consistent and clear messages for local people
  • talk to members of the public about projects, gather their ideas and dig deeper to draw out unique insight
  • devise and execute interesting and unique ways of presenting information and capturing feedback on the information from members of the public
  • on occasion attend evening and weekend events
  • help create graphic assets for make:good’s social media and online channels
  • handle other office duties as appropriate including ordering materials, arranging event logistics, budgeting, programming and diary management.

The team

We are a small, friendly interdisciplinary team and have a supportive office culture. We respect one another, the people we work with, and the places we work in.

We aim to have lunch together every Tuesday and have a local business who caters for us allowing us to spend time together as a team. We have an adorable studio dog called Cotton. We really encourage people in our team to bring their full selves to work – individuality is an asset.
